HippoTherapy
Hippotherapy literally means Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy using the horse as a tool to address impairments, functional limitations, cognitive delays and disabilities in patients with neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction.
As far back as the 1600's, the physical and emotional benefits of equine-assisted therapy have been recognized as beneficial. The motion of a horse stimulates and tones the muscles, while the relationship with the animal promotes a sense of empowerment and happiness in the rider. Hippotherapy combines physical, occupational, and speech therapies with the movement of the horse to obtain specific therapy goals. At DCTC, specially-trained therapists use Hippotherapy in treating individuals with neurological disorders, ADHD, spinal cord injuries, developmental delays, Sensory Integration (S.I.) and/or skeletal dysfunction.
S.I. techniques have also been shown to decrease hyperactivity and distractibility, thus enhancing attention span and the ability to focus in the classroom.
Further benefits of Hippotherapy include:
-
Improved postural alignment, control, and coordination
-
Strengthening of the trunk, spinal, leg, and shoulder muscles
-
Positive change in cognitive, behavioral, and attention span
-
Relaxation of muscle tone

Anyone whose disability presents special obstacles has the opportunity to overcome them!
